My mom's marathoning House and we just watched "Detox." The large problem with Detox is how House's pain management is dealt with by doctors, who should know better. But arguably the biggest the problem is how it's translated into fandom. Cameron's cunt or Wilson's cock will never be a proper fix for House's pain management due to the infarction. Unless their bodily fluids have special pain powers, that's never going to happen. Plus who wants to have sex when you're hurt or sick.
At the end of "Detox," my younger brother, like fandom, pointed out that House was a wimp for not being able to deal with his pain without Vicodin. You can always hear my younger brother walking down the stairs as his knee pops and cracks from his reconstructive knee surgery. Then I explained that an infarction, according to Merriam-Webster, is "an area of necrosis in a tissue or organ resulting from obstruction of the local circulation by a thrombus or embolus" and how yes, House's pain is worse than his. However, unlike my brother and his tough love due to his own injury, fandom likes its woobies and woobifies House's pain.
Now what does this have to do with Wilson? My brother's reaction came from Wilson's speech about House's addiction at the end of the episode. In more recent episodes, such as "Daddy's Boy," Wilson once again points out that House is miserable (to Cameron this time).
I disagree with Wilson's perception that House is miserable. I think House is unhappy some of the time. But we all are. And unlike many of us, House loves his job and loves to solve problems. Sure, he's married to his work instead of someone else, but House, like other single adults, is subjected to the idea that people should find a "soul mate" and get married. As far as his attitude, Stacey, Cuddy, and even House's parents acknowledge that House has always been a stubborn jerk. In "Three Stories," we see him during the infarction and refusing suggested treatments. House didn't go from a pre-infarction cuddly, fluffy bunny to a jaded, rude curmudgeon with a cane post-infarction.
Beyond being Jewish, we know that Wilson is on his third marriage, that he cheats on his wives, that things are rocky with Julie (3rd wife), and that he possibly did cheat on her as House notices his green tie. Wilson is the head of oncology and people hug him when he tells them that they have cancer and/or dying. He's also very loyal best friend to House and has tried to save House's job, risking his own in the process. House also accuses Wilson of saving all the patients that fall through the cracks in other departments. If someone's job is depressing, it's Wilson's. Even if his patients live, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are depressing. I think that the reason he refers and pushes patients to House is because they have a better chance to come out alive than Wilson's own patients.
Let's recap: Wilson's job is depressing; his marriage is on the rocks; and his best friend is an ass who's put both their jobs on the rocks.
Conclusion: Just who's miserable?
I also wonder about Wilson's relationship with his parents given his interest and meddling with House's parents. Thoughts?
